People with dementia sometimes do not like the kinds of foods they used to enjoy. You might notice that your loved one with dementia only wants to eat sweet things. I’ve worked with many people with dementia who only want to eat dessert, rather than their meals. I’ve even spoken with a person who was worried that their loved one with dementia wanted chocolate on everything, even their meals!
A person with dementia who prefers to eat desserts may not get balanced meals or the nutrition that they need. Simple sweets desserts do not have the proteins or vitamins and minerals that a full meal would.
If your loved one only wants to eat sweet things, you can try this high protein chocolate smoothie. It contains half a cup of blueberries, 325 calories, 21 grams of protein and 8 g fiber.
How to make this smoothie

To make this simple and delicious smoothie, start with half a cup of blueberries. Add brown sugar, peanut butter, vanilla extract, Greek yogurt, and milk. I prefer plain non fat Greek yogurt and 2% milk.

Blend ingredients in a blender until smooth. This usually takes a few minutes on a low to medium setting on your blender.

The smoothie will be about 1 1/4 cups.
This rich, high protein chocolate smoothie has enough calories and protein to replace a meal for your loved one if they only want to have dessert. You should know, though, that this smoothie is high in potassium. For this reason, it would not work for someone with reduced kidney function.
